The Short Answer
For most homes, you should change your air filter every 1 to 3 months. But the right interval depends on several factors specific to your home and system.
Why It Matters More Than You Think
Your air filter does two things: it keeps dust and debris out of your HVAC equipment, and it affects your indoor air quality. A clogged filter forces your system to work harder, which increases energy consumption, accelerates wear on components, and can eventually cause your system to overheat or freeze up.
Replacing a dirty filter is one of the cheapest and easiest things you can do to extend the life of your equipment and keep your energy bills in check.
How Often Depends on Your Situation
- 1 inch filters — change every 30 days if you have pets, allergies, or a dusty home; every 60–90 days otherwise
- 4 inch media filters — typically every 6 to 12 months
- Pets in the home — shorten your interval by 30 days
- Allergy sufferers — change more frequently, consider a MERV 11+ filter
- Vacation home or rarely used — every 6 months is usually fine
Signs Your Filter Needs Changing Now
Don’t wait for your scheduled interval if you notice any of these: your system seems to run longer than usual, rooms aren’t reaching temperature, you can see visible dust buildup on vents, or your energy bill has crept up without explanation.
What Filter Should You Buy?
Look for a MERV rating between 8 and 13 for most homes. Higher isn’t always better — very high MERV filters can actually restrict airflow in systems not designed for them. When in doubt, check your owner’s manual or give us a call and we’ll point you in the right direction.
